I Was in a Relationship with Art: An Interview with Amy Johnson

Amy_johnson_1 Centrum: Could you talk about your development as an artist?

Amy Johnson: This is a huge question for me. My initial inclination to become an artist was a decision for sure--a very clear decision that I made--and from then on I've had blinders on to develop to the point where I am now. Sometimes the blinders are narrower than others. But they are flexible and have to be.

I began to seriously consider art in 2001, I was 25, I wasn’t someone who knew right off that I wanted to be an artist. It’s interesting to me because my mom is an artist and I grew up with art, but it really wasn’t until I left home and moved across the country and did my own thing for a while that I realized that it was what I wanted to commit to career-wise.

Registration Open for Youth Programs

Young Artist Wanted: young artists ready for challenge and inspiration.

We're pleased to announce that we are now taking registrations for our 2008 Young Artists Project workshops.

Living and working with the Core Artist Faculty, hand-selected from among the region’s most vital, contemporary artists, young artists can engage with their passions in a way not possible in the daily school routine.

First up in January is a Visual Arts Master Class with Jeffry Mitchell and Amy Johnson. Following that in February is a Dance and Video Master Class with Zoe Scofield and Juniper Shuey. Each of these high school sessions is limited to just 15 students.

...and that's just the beginning. We'll also host workshops and intensives for elementary, middle school, and high-school students through the end of June, 2008, when our intergenerational workshops begin.

We hope you can join us here at Centrum in 2008. If you know of young artists who are looking for an unmatched experience, please send them our way.

These artists will be in residence at Fort Worden State Park, creating and making new discoveries in their own art while sharing their experiences in immersive workshops and master classes with high school and middle school artists.
