(Runs concurrently with Salsa Dance Intensive)
For several years, Jazz Port Townsend workshop attendees have asked for a Latin Jazz workshop to learn more about the special rhythmic and stylistic elements of this music.
Now we are happy to announce a Latin Jazz Intensive led by Berklee School of Music faculty member Oscar Stagnaro, an internationally known Latin Jazz educator and virtuoso bassist who has performed and recorded with Paquito D’Rivera, David Sanchez, Chucho Valdez, Ray Baretto and many more Latin greats.

At the Intensive you will learn how to play and use a variety of Latin rhythms including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean as well as developing your improvisation skills in the Latin idiom. You’ll perform in a combo with expert coaching along with public performance opportunities over the weekend, including playing for Centrum’s Salsa Dance intensive running concurrently with this workshop. (You’ll also have an opportunity to learn some dance steps, which will greatly help your understanding of the rhythms!)
Don’t miss this special opportunity to seriously upgrade your Latin chops in a fun-filled long weekend at Fort Worden.
Who should attend the Latin Jazz Intensive?Instrumentalists and Singers: The workshop is designed for players who are proficient on their instruments, but not necessarily at a professional level. (People still learning the basics of playing or singing will be happier waiting for a future workshop). Experience in improvising is helpful, but not required.
