Port Townsend and Fort Worden are pleased to welcome the 133d Army Band of the Washington National Guard to McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden State Park on Saturday July 3rd at 7pm, for a rousing start to the area's annual Fourth of July celebration.
This free community concert is co-sponsored by the Coast Artillery Museum, and the Commanding Officer’s Quarters, with generous assistance by Centrum and Fort Worden State Park.
The 133d Army Band was organized in 1924. During World War II, the Band’s campaign credits include New Guinea, Luzon and the Southern Philippines. The Band completed its WWII service in Japan.
The 133d Army Band held the distinction of being the only all African-American Army National Guard Band in the United States until President Truman integrated the military in 1948. Today the 45-member133d is based at Camp Murray in Tacoma, and is lead by Chief Warrant Officer Scott T. Pierson of North Olmsted, Ohio.
The 133d provides music throughout the full spectrum of military operations fostering the support of citizens, and promotes national interests at home and abroad. The soldiers of the 133d proudly serve as musical ambassadors for the Governor and Adjutant General for the State of Washington.
