July 24th - Introduction to Handtools: Jim Tolpin

Or putting the Woo! Woo! back into Woodworking.

Working wood with hand-powered tools is, in many cases, not only more appropriate but they are quiet, do not make dust and are a whole lot more fun to use. Come watch Jim Tolpin demonstrate smoothing boards, paring joints and making moldings with hand planes and cutting dovetails and other complex joints quickly with a hand saw.

Jim Tolpin is a founder of the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and a nationally known woodworking author.

A Soul Motion™ Experience! with Zuza Engler - Body Prayer Workshop - 3 Days of Dance and Inspiration

Zuzaposter08medMadrona MindBody Institute - Port Townsend's well-being and moving arts center at Fort Worden presents:

BODY PRAYER with Zuza Engler
    October 10th, 11th & 12th, 2008

Body Prayer a wild and luminous offering of the body in motion to this sacred Presence that is continually breathing us into Being.

This workshop is not so much an invitation to dance, as it is an enticement to enter into a spirited engagement with Life.

Open to dedicated dance devotees, beginning movers, and all curious and willing to meet self and other.

Jens Wazel (dance teacher - Seattle) wrote to his students regarding Zuza's visit to the Northwest:

" I consider Zuza my favorite facilitator in the field of conscious dance - she is one of the main sources of inspiration for my own work.

Zuza brings a very unique mix of grounded strength, loving kindness, deep wisdom, and wild motion to her work that I can promise will leave you changed. Zuza's workshops at places like Esalen typically sell out well in advance, and it is her first time teaching in the Northwest, so this is a very exciting opportunity to welcome and work with her right here at home".

Zuza Enger has been on the spiral path of the kinesthetic investigation into consciousness for over two decades, in motion, stillness and process inquiry. She is a long-term student and practioner of Buddhism, Soul Motion™ and Gestalt Awareness Practice,  Zuza teaches regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and Internationally - she  is on the faculty of the Soul Motion™ Teacher Certification Program.

Atlas Eclipticalis in the Cistern

Mark your calendars now--August 22. 8:30pm.

Those of you who attended the Stuart Dempster cistern concert during our 2007 Chamber Music Festival remember what a special performance it was. 45 second reverb. Surround sound on the lawn above the 4 million gallon underground water tank at Fort Worden's Artillery Hill.

Atlas Eclipticalis Star ChartWell, we're upping the ante.

On the date that you have now marked on your calendar, Matt Kocmieroski, Walter Gray and Seth Krimsky (both of the Seattle Symphony), along with Stuart Dempster, will perform the landmark modernist work Atlas Eclipticalis, by John Cage.

Composed via star charts, Atlas Eclipticalis takes listeners on a journey. Listening to it within the context of the cistern, while looking at the stars? We feel this will simply be an incredible experience.

It's a free concert, and we hope you can join us. Learn more by visiting our performance page.

Free Lecture: Timberframe Construction July 10th at 6:30pm

Timberframe "Timber framing is a simple but elegant building system consisting of large wood posts and beams fit together with interlocking joinery and secured with wooden pegs. As in any post and beam structure the timber framework supports its roof by transferring roof loads to principal posts and onto the foundation of the building eliminating the need for load bearing interior partition walls. The result is a strong, self supporting timber structure in which heavy timbers frame large, open living spaces.

This talk will place the modern craft of timber framing in the context of its historic development and describe some of the unique features of the contemporary timber-frame building system. Examples of recently constructed timber frame residences and public buildings will demonstrate the flexibility and energy efficiency of modern timber frame structures. It is my hope that the strength and beauty of the buildings you see, will persuade you that the future of timber framing promises to be as rich as its past and that if you choose to work in this field you will be inspired to design and build buildings that stretch the existing aesthetic and structural boundaries of timber frame construction."

Charles Landau founded Timbercraft Homes (based in Port Townsend). Charles sold the business several years ago, now in retirement (and no less busy), Charles will share his love of Timberframing in this presentation.
