Executive Director Search Announcement

Centrum is a 36-year-old nonprofit dedicated to serving artists of all ages and backgrounds through residential workshops, creative residencies, and public performances. Centrum and Fort Worden State Park were founded as a partnership between the Washington State Arts Commission and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. This partnership would blend the bounty of a spectacular natural setting with the invigoration of creative intellectual engagement, to provide rare opportunities for community learning, expansive thought, and artistic creation.

Centrum is a $3 million organization that has experienced steady growth in revenues over the last five years. Centrum currently is in the process of upgrading all systems and communications technologies and restructuring staff in order to expand program and partnership opportunities in ways that increase financial vitality.

Lifelong Learning a Reality at Fort Worden; Changes for Centrum

On September 25, the Washington State Parks Commission voted unanimously to begin the process of finding and selecting a nonprofit organization to pursue management and operations of the planned life-long learning center at Fort Worden.

Today, Centrum announced its intention to submit a Letter of Interest to Washington State Parks to begin negotiations about options for nonprofit management.

Thatcher Bailey will resign as Centrum's Executive Director, effective November 15, to assemble a task force—including Centrum Board members Cindy Hill Finnie and John Begley—which will develop this application. Bailey will work as a consultant to Centrum through this process.

"This is a moment of extraordinary opportunity for Fort Worden, the local community, and the region," says Centrum Board President, Libby Reid. "We are deeply excited by the new vision for Fort Worden and want to play a role in building a partnership economy that serves and benefits all resident partners and users of the Park along with the local community."

The Centrum Board has begun a search to replace Bailey as Executive Director. In the meantime, Kisha Palmer will take charge of staff and day-to-day operations as Managing Director. "We remain 100% committed to strengthening and diversifying Centrum's core programs," explains Reid. "We are extremely fortunate that Kisha is in place as we move through this next phase of Centrum's evolution."

Atlas Eclipticalis in the Cistern

Mark your calendars now--August 22. 8:30pm.

Those of you who attended the Stuart Dempster cistern concert during our 2007 Chamber Music Festival remember what a special performance it was. 45 second reverb. Surround sound on the lawn above the 4 million gallon underground water tank.

Well, we're upping the ante.

On the date that you have now marked on your calendar, Matt Kocmieroski, Walter Gray and Seth Krimsky (both of the Seattle Symphony), along with Stuart Dempster, will perform the landmark modernist work Atlas Eclipticalis, by John Cage.

Composed via star charts, Atlas Eclipticalis takes listeners on a journey. Listening to it within the context of the cistern, while looking at the stars? We feel this will simply be an incredible experience.
