2009 Free Fridays at the Fort

Free Fridays at the Fort
For more than two decades, Centrum has produced a free summer concert series for visitors, residents, and families in Port Townsend. From its humble beginnings downtown to its roomy home on the lawn outside the Fort Worden Commons, the series is an excellent way to sample what happens at Centrum in the summer.

We call it Free Fridays at the Fort, and we hope you can join your friends for our 2009 performance series, sponsored by the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader. Seating is provided (or bring your favorite blanket), local and sustainable food is available, and the entertainment is free.

Each performance starts at noon on the lawn at the Fort Worden Commons, and is weather dependent (except for August 7, which will be rescheduled if needed).

  • July 3: Festival of American Fiddle Tunes Sampler
  • July 10: "Blues-Grass" 12-string guitarist Daniel Macke
  • July 17: Readings from the Port Townsend Writers' Conference: Camille Dungy and Shane Book
  • July 24: Jazz Port Townsend Workshop Performances
  • July 31: Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival Workshop Performances
  • August 7: Dream City Idol Contest Final Performance

Borromeo Quartet Plays Auerbach

The Borromeo String Quartet performs this Friday and Saturday at the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park. (Purchase tickets 24/7 online or at 800-838-3006.)

Fridays concert program is ambitious:

  • J.S. Bach, Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 582
(arranged for String Quartet by Nicholas Kitchen)
  • Lera Auerbach, String Quartet No. 3, 'Cetera Desunt,' (2006)
  • Ludwig van Beethoven, String Quartet in C# Minor, Op. 131

One of the most widely performed composers of the new generation, Lera Auerbach continues the great tradition of pianist-composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Auerbach's music is characterized by its stylistic freedom and juxtaposition of tonal and atonal musical language.

The Quartet recently shot a video of their performance of Auerbach's String Quartet No. 3, and we've included a clip from the 4th movement below.

For complete concert information, please visit our Borromeo page.

2009 Volunteer “Job Fair” June 16th

Centrum’s 2009 “Volunteers’ Job Fair” will be at 4pm on Tuesday June 16th at the McCurdy Pavilion.  This event is in place of the Volunteer Orientation of previous years.

There will be handouts that more completely describe each volunteer assignment, so those of you who are new or might be considering trying something new will be able to pick up more information. We’ll get to look at the empty venue and talk about safety and emergency procedures. We’ll also introduce a special project that Leah Hammer and I think will be fun… and we’ll be asking for your input and participation.

For those of you who signed up to work with ACCESS Services, this will be an opportunity to take a look at the Pavilion set up and learn about our new  “ACCESS Team Discretionary Seating” procedure. This procedure was implemented last season under the guidance of Lois Frisch, Trudy Rosenberg and Sue Cook. It’s a simple way to give the ACCESS Team the ability to operate seamlessly during events.

It will be a nice way for us to informally gather and kick off the new and exciting summer of Centrum Programs.

Like the Orientation meeting of previous years, this is not a mandatory event. Some of you have already responded that you are unable to attend, which is of course understandable. But for those of you who can spare an hour or two, it would be great to have you come down.

We’ll also be taking a look at the big tent that production will set up for us, and you can chime in on this idea: Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue/Party – a daytime weekend event (first or second weekend in October?) held on the green next to the Pavilion. Centrum will set up the big tent, tables and chairs, and host a grill party.

I’ll have a “ballot box” on hand so you can express yourself!

'Thank You' to Our Supporters

Dear Centrum Supporter and Arts Education Advocate:

From all of us at Centrum, we want to express our utmost gratitude to all of our supporters, who, through their work in writing and contacting their legislators, ensured that Centrum’s funding was a part of the state’s biennium budget for 2010 and 2011 at the same level of funding in the previous budget.  This was a very challenging task and we are extremely grateful that we will be able offer Washington students the opportunity to positively impact their lives through the arts.

We are very mindful of the fact that we have three outstanding legislators in our district – Representatives, Majority Leader Lynn Kessler and Deputy Majority Whip Kevin Van De Wege along with Senator James Hargrove.  These individuals spent countless hours behind the scenes working with their fellow legislators to restore and preserve this funding.

Having been involved in arts education advocacy in other states and communities around the nation, I am greatly moved by the activist spirit of Washingtonians and the fact that so many Centrum supporters from all over the state took time to call and write their legislators. It clearly made the difference.

Again, thank you for your continued support of Centrum, its programs, and arts education in the State of Washington.

Gratefully,

John A. MacElwee
Executive Director

A recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Medallion for Artistry, and the Presidential Scholar in the Arts award, first violinist Nicholas Kitchen been performing professionally since the age of 12. He created seven seasons of innovative programming as Artistic Director of the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival and performs as a member of the Music From the Copland House ensemble.

Praised for his depth of insight and creative flair, second violinist Kristopher Tong began his career as concertmaster of the Utah Youth Symphony at age 14. He has served on the faculty at the Yellow Barn Festival’s Young Artists Program, and as principal second violin with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, touring with them throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Mr. Tong has also performed with Mizayaki festival Orchestra in Japan, the New York String Orchestra, and was a member of the original cast of Classical Savion, a collaborative project with tap dancer Savion Glover.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, violist Mai Motobuchi started playing violin at age five and gained recognition in Asia as first prize winner in the 1989 All Japan MBS Youth Music Competition, and in the All Japan Ensemble Competitions in 1990 and 1991. She has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and Seiji Ozawa, and is in demand as a teacher on two continents, serving on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and the Tenrikyo Institute of Music in Tenri, Japan.

Hailed by the New York Times for her “focused intensity,” cellist Yeesun Kim made her orchestral debut at age 13 with the Korean Broadcasting Service Symphony, and has since performed in over 20 countries. She has collaborated with Rudolph Serkin, Joshua Bell, Christophe Eschenbach, and Leon Fleisher, among others. The Borromeo Quartet takes its name from the area in Northern Italy, by Lago Maggiore, where it played its first concerts together.

Centrum Needs Your Help

Dear Centrum supporter and arts education advocate:

We urgently need your help.

For 37 years, Centrum has provided tens of thousands of Washington students life changing experiences through arts programs at Fort Worden State Park.  During this time, Centrum has received partial state funding ($170,000 per year) for these programs through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).   Even with the need to reduce Washington's state budget, both Governor Gregoire and the Senate understand the value of Centrum youth programs and have kept Centrum in their respective 2010 and 2011 OSPI budgets.

Unfortunately, Washington's House of Representatives has removed Centrum funding from its version of the budget. The loss of this funding would result not only in the termination of these valuable education programs, but would also seriously threaten Centrum's future as one of Washington's leading cultural institutions.

As well, these programs provide substantial income for the State through additional park fees.  During the last biennium (two year) budget cycle, Centrum paid the State $1.2 million in park fees through its programs.

If you or your children, or someone you know have benefited from Centrum's programs, we ask that you take a couple of minutes to send an email or make a phone call (ideally both) to your Washington House representatives.  It's easy; just follow the links and the steps outlined below.

Thank you for your consideration and for your support.

Sincerely,

John A. MacElwee

SUGGESTED NOTE:

Dear Representative (Last Name):

I am writing to ask you to reinstate funding for Centrum's youth programs at Fort Worden State Park in section 511 of the House budgets for 2010 and 2011 as its appears in both the Senate's and Governor's budgets.

For 37 years, Centrum has provided tens of thousands of Washington students "life changing" experiences through the arts during residencies at the Park.

(Personally, Centrum has offered (me, my child, our community) the chance....)

(I feel strongly about Centrum because....)

Thank you for your consideration.

March 2009 News From Centrum

I am delighted to announce that John MacElwee has accepted an offer from the Centrum Board of Directors and will become the fifth Executive Director in the thirty-seven year history of Centrum. MacElwee (pronounced Mac-ELL-wee) will begin his tenure at the beginning of April. John replaces Thatcher Bailey who is now focusing on the newly established Fort Worden Collaborative.

John has worked in the field of arts management for over twenty-five years, and was selected from a field of forty-five applicants. We are thrilled to find a person of John’s caliber. He is the perfect fit for our organization. As Detroit Symphony Chairman Emeritus, Peter D. Cummings described him, he’s “the best non-profit marketer I ever worked with.”

“I am so excited to be a part of Centrum,” John says.  “I look forward to working with all of you to ensure
that Centrum communities and programs remain strong. I’m excited about all of the collaborative possibilities both at Fort Worden State Park and in Port Townsend, which, together, comprise a truly magical corner of the world. I am meeting with staff and board members prior to my start, and will reach out to as many of you as I can upon my arrival in April.”

John’s career started twenty-five years ago in the field of marketing, fundraising, and community relations for symphony orchestras, including the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, California. the Houston Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony, where he served as Vice President for Marketing and Communications--and where he brought tickets sales to their highest levels.

He also initiated two new community based jazz programs as part of the orchestra’s outreach programming. He later moved to the directorship of the Arts Council of Sonoma County, where he has worked with a broad array of community arts programs. Most recently, he was lead consultant in developing the business plan for the $120 million Green Music Center at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, scheduled to open in 2011. Throughout his management career, John has continued to perform as a bass player with varied jazz ensembles, as well as orchestras and bluegrass groups.

COMMUNITY UPDATES
Moving forward in 2009, all of us at Centrum are committed to sustaining and growing the communities and experiences that you love. Our four strategic values—cultural competence, artistic relevance, partnership, and financial vitality will guide our work this year and beyond, underlining the responsibility to ensure the continued growth of our communities and its artists. So what’s happening in our communities? Visit www.centrum.org for all of the latest information, but here’s a taste:

Fiddle Tunes at Centrum
We just wrapped up a very successful Quebecois Fiddle Tunes Intensive in March with De Temps Antan, and are working with Artistic Director Dirk Powell, gearing up for this summer’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. In November, we focus on Cajun music and culture during Le Bal de Maison - A Cajun House Party taking place at Fort Worden.

Residencies and New Work
At the end of 2008, we refocused our Artist in Residence program to support the creation of New Work by artists. This initiative is paying off. Over 120 artists are scheduled to be with us so far in 2009, creating new art at Fort Worden.

Young Artist Project
We are set to launch our middle school Explorations workshops, which give students from across the state  - as well as the all 7th graders in Port Townsend-  the opportunity to work with an amazing group of artists, including African dancers, Caribbean drummers, Latin American sculptors and glass blowers, Japanese musicians, and modern American hip-hop artists. It will also be a very busy summer for young artists, with our Summer High School Arts Camp; DANCE This – a new partnership with Seattle Theatre Group for high-schoolers; and Whale Camp – a new partnership with The Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

The Centrum Writers’ Exchange
Artistic Director Cristina García has crafted a completely sold-out workshop May 7-10 entitled Holding Your Gaze: The Literature of Witness, with poet Carolyn Forché. And the week of July 12-19, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference will feature novelist Chris Abani, nonfiction writers Kim Barnes and Denise Chávez, poets Mark Doty and Robert Wrigely, and many others.

Jazz at Centrum

When you look at the faculty for 2009 Jazz Port Townsend, you see the future of jazz in America. Artistic Director John Clayton has invited a dynamic and exciting group of young artists to join some of our favorite faculty, and the results are outstanding; workshop registrations are well ahead of projections. We’ve also just announced two new gatherings that will take place in the fall, a Big Band Intensive led by John Clayton, and an Advanced Improvisation Intensive with Geoffrey Keezer.

Blues at Centrum
MacArthur Fellow Corey Harris kicks off his first year as Artistic Director of Blues at Centrum by inviting Terry Bean, Jerron Paxton, and Hook Herrera to come to Fort Worden in late April for a Traditional Back Porch Blues Summit. He’s also asked three West African musicians—Cheick Hamala Diabaté, Moussa Konate, and Mohamed Kouyate to join this summer’s (renamed) Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival to highlight our shared musical heritage. In October, we’ll be hosting a Piedmont Blues Intensive with John Dee Holeman, Michael Roach, and Lightnin’ Wells.

Fort Worden
At the end of the year, Centrum responded to a “Request for Letters of Interest” from Washington State Parks, outlining the organization’s long-term commitment to Fort Worden. Centrum’s application has been favorably reviewed and a two-year effort is now underway to achieve a host of mutually agreed upon organizational, financial, and program milestones that prove the wisdom of the State developing a long term co-management agreement with Centrum.

The working group for the newly named Fort Worden Collaborative consists of Fort Worden Manager Kate Burke, Centrum Board members John Begley and Cindy Hill Finnie, and former Centrum Executive Director Thatcher Bailey. In its efforts to develop, support, and promote creative learning and discovery at Fort Worden. The Collaborative will devote resources to strengthen the alliance of public, private nonprofit, and for profit enterprises at the Park.

In gratitude,
Libby Reid, Centrum Board President

Centrum Hires MacElwee as Executive Director

Centrum today announced the selection of John MacElwee (mack-ELL-we) of Sonoma County, Calif. as its new Executive Director.  MacElwee, who has been in the field of arts management for over 25 years, was selected from a field of 45 applicants from across the United States.

Centrum Board President Libby Reid stated “We are delighted to find a person of the caliber of John MacElwee.  He is the perfect fit for our organization, and will provide the strong leadership needed in such challenging times as these.”  A former employer, Detroit Symphony Chairman Emeritus, Peter D. Cummings, describes him as “the best non-profit marketer I ever worked with”.

“I am thrilled to join Centrum at this critical juncture in its nearly 40-year history,” said MacElwee.  “I look forward to working with Libby Reid and the Board as well as the staff in not only in ensuring that the organization’s acclaimed programs for aspiring and established artists remain strong, but also in looking ahead at all the collaborative possibilities both at Fort Worden State Park and in Port Townsend, which, together, comprise a truly magical corner of the world.”

He is expected to begin his tenure with Centrum in April.

MacElwee will follow Thatcher Bailey, the last Centrum Director, who has moved into a new role, in cooperation with Washington State Parks, to develop an expanded vision for the Fort Worden State Park and Centrum as a Life Long Learning Center.

MacElwee’s career started 25 years ago in the field of marketing, fundraising, and community relations for symphony orchestras, including the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, Calif., later with the Houston Symphony, and then with the Detroit Symphony, where he served as Vice President for Marketing and Communications. During his tenure in Detroit where he brought tickets sales to their highest levels, MacElwee also initiated two new community based jazz programs as part of the orchestra’s outreach programming. He later moved to the directorship of the Arts Council of Sonoma County, where he worked with a broad array of community arts programs.

MacElwee also has extensive experience in the performing arts and community development consulting field, where most recently he was lead consultant in developing the business plan for the $120 million Green Music Center at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif., scheduled to open in 2011.  He currently serves as an organizational consultant to the Healdsburg, (Calif.) Jazz Festival and served in a similar capacity with the Santa Rosa Main Street Association.

Throughout his management career, MacElwee has continued to perform as a bass player with varied jazz ensembles, as well as orchestras and bluegrass groups.  Following his undergraduate degree from Lawrence University (Wisc.) with majors in music and government, he continued his string bass studies with the late Homer Mensch of the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

Centrum is now in the 36th year of presenting arts workshops, festivals and K-12 education programs at Fort Worden State Park. These include, among others:  The Young Artist Project, Artist Residencies, The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Jazz Port Townsend, Port Townsend Writers Conference, and The Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
