The Port Townsend Chamber Music Festival:
Joseph F. Wheeler Celebration Series – The Cypress String Quartet

Returning to Centrum by overwhelming demand, the Cypress String Quartet continues the Chamber Music Festival with a performance in the Wheeler Theater at 2 PM on Sunday, February 19. The quartet will perform works by Mendelssohn (String Quartet No. 2) and Beethoven (String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132), as well as new work from composer Kevin Puts (Lento Assai, 2009).

Explorations
Part of Centrum’s Young Artist programming, Centrum’s Explorations middle-school workshop, in partnership with Washington’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, is a week-long total-immersion residential experience. It’s a chance to converse, draw, play music, paint, dance, perform, and write in an intense, fun-filled time of learning.

Choro
April 14, 7:30pm concert in the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater.
Described at the Brazilian cousin to jazz and the forerunner of Bossa Nova, Choro provides common ground for proficient jazz and classically trained musicians to meet for an intensive weekend of master classes and performances featuring internationally renowned choro artists, and culminating in a public performance at the Wheeler Theater.

The Port Townsend Chamber Music Festival, under the artistic direction of Lucinda Carver, concludes on Sunday, April 22 at 2 PM with a performance featuring the West Coast’s finest period instrument players, including Ingrid Matthews, Music Director of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra.

Water World
In partnership with the Port Townsend marine Science Center, Centrum’s Water World is celebrating its 20th year in 2012, and features activities and projects that expand and enhance elementary students’ experience of the marine world through the lenses of both science and art.

Voice Works
The popular Voice Works workshop returns to the Centrum lineup for 2012 with an outstanding lineup of talented faculty. This focused workshop features instruction for novice singers, as well as experienced vocalists looking to improve their artistry and technique. Performance schedule to be determined.

The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes
Suzy Thompson, Artistic Director
The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes is celebrating its 36th year in 2012 as one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the nation. Artistic Director Suzy Thompson has assembled fiddle virtuosos and standard bearers of the old-time tradition to help you explore a wide variety of fiddle styles, with an emphasis on the oral tradition of close observation and listening. Day-long workshops offer coaching in fiddle, guitar, banjo, piano, singing, string bass, mandolin, and social dance. Evenings will feature intimate showcase concerts and social dancing. The Advanced High School Visual Art and Writing Studios
Centrum is proud to introduce two new advanced level courses for high school students – in writing and visual arts, allowing high school students the opportunity to make great strides in their creative work.
The 2012 Advance High School Writers’ Studio is the first time that high school writers will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Port Townsend Writers’ Conference, one of the longest consecutive running gatherings of writers in the nation. Explore a variety of writing topics and subject matter while learning to focus your skills to create new work.
The 2012 Advanced High School Visual Art Studio is your opportunity to explore both figurative and abstract painting at an advanced level. Guided by master artists, you’ll discover new techniques and concepts for creating compelling pictorial space and dynamic color interaction, and harness light, color, composition, and your own imagination to create inspired original work.

The Port Townsend Writers’ Conference

Designed for beginning, emerging, and actively publishing writers, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference has been at the heart of the thriving Pacific Northwest literary scene since 1974. In 2012 the Conference has been expanded to two weeks – choose from a 4-day, 7-day, 10-day, or 14-day option! The conference also offers drop-in afternoon workshops, residencies, and guided free-writes, as well as a vibrant reading and lecture series. Readings and lectures schedule to be determined.

Jazz Port Townsend

Founded in 1977, Jazz Port Townsend is one of the nation’s oldest and most celebrated jazz workshops. Artistic Director John Clayton and a world-class roster of faculty mentors have created a unique format that will include master class coaching, combo performance, and informal jamming. The workshop culminates in public performances at Centrum’s famed 1200-seat McCurdy Pavilion, as well as club performances throughout Port Townsend. Performance schedule to be determined.

The Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival
Daryl Davis, Artistic Director
Experience the rich tradition of acoustic blues through workshops and live performances. Develop your proficiency in blues guitar, slide guitar, Piedmont-style finger picking, harmonica, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, blues piano, zydeco accordion, bass, and washboard. The schedule features day-long opportunities for playing, informal jamming, an assortment of band labs, and the popular participants' concert. The 2012 Acoustic Blues festival also includes mainstage performances at McCurdy Pavilion, and club performances throughout Port Townsend. Performance schedule to be determined.
August 5-11
DANCE This!
Produced by the Seattle Theater Group (STG) in collaboration with Centrum, the workshop provides classes in African, Ballet, Hip-Hop and modern dance classes with professional dance instructors from the Seattle area. Each day includes technique classes, repertory instruction and choreography sessions, with time for meals and exploring the Fort Worden campus. At the end of the week, students share their work at a Saturday showcase for friends and family.
September 21-23
Reverberations
Seattle-based composer/pianist Wayne Horvitz, audio engineer and producer Tucker Martine, Japanese dancer/choreographer Yukio Suzuki and Japanese video artist Yohei Saito will be in residence at Centrum in 2012 for a three-week period to create Music and Dance in Concrete. The new multimedia piece will receive its world premiere in Fort Worden State Park's historic batteries and cistern on as part of Centrum's Reverberations festival. The project will feature 55 short improvised and 55 composed works which will include installations that utilize video screens and speakers placed in the concrete military structures, live performances from Suzuki and his dancers on the gun emplacement platforms, and performances from Horvitz and guest musicians in the Harpole Cistern, which is known worldwide for its long reverberation time.

Beginning in 2011, the State of Washington implemented the Discover Pass at all Washington State Parks, including Fort Worden. However, be assured that if you are coming to the Fort for a Centrum event as detailed below, an entrance fee will not be charged.
The Details:
- Workshops: you must be a registered participant, faculty member, or staying in parks housing overnight
- Events: ticket holders for ticketed events, or while attending free events (Free Fridays, readings, lectures)
- Volunteers: while volunteering at Centrum events.
